Thursday May 15, 2008 Hi everyone! Work aboard the Royal Polaris continues at an organized chaotic pace. Steve Loomis and Frank continue to chase parts, organize jobs to be done and get the right people down to the boat at the right time. Frank even got to sand on the hull for a couple of hours - which relieved some stress. Billy is becoming quite the welder and fabricator on small jobs. There were an unbelievable amount of man hours put into grinding the hatches that were cut to remove the engines. The starboard hatch was completed by 7pm. The port hatch should be completely welded in by noon on Friday. The painting crew will be glossing the bulworks and the entire hull on Saturday and Sunday. We do the 1st coat on Saturday and the 2nd on Sunday. The Green guard rail and boot stripe will get 2 coats on Monday. The entire crew will be working through the weekend and I will not bother you with another report until Monday. Frank Thursday May 15, 2008 Hi everyone! Wednesday May 14, 2008 Hi folks - WOW it is really hard to keep up the all that is happening on the Royal Polaris. Here is a quick glance: 1. Big D is prepping bridge for all varnish work 2. Eddie and Aaron - morning work had Aaron plumbing new fuel lines for machinery. Eddie was grinding on aluminum in the side access hatch, applied Aluma prep and then painted with Strontuim (this is to protect aluminum) the afternoon had both guys back in exhaust trunks doing same thing Eddie was doing up forward. Nasty work - on your belly in tight quarters 3. Billy was working on fuel lines, plumbing water to sea strainers and building brackets for Raycor fuel filters 4. Tom Dale, Greg Hibbs and Woody Peebles continue to put in 10 hour days with electrical and mechanical of re-power 5. Laborers (2 of them) grinding on aluminum hatches so welders can weld them in place 6. Welders remove 3'x3' piece of aluminum on hull and replace and fit new piece. Once fitted, they wait for Coast Guard to ok the welding on Thursday. The old aluminum piece of hull was absolutely beautiful. 7. Danny continues to work on all the stateroom drawers, speakers, bunk lamps etc. 8. Steve Russow doing Formica work 9. Painters plus rest of crew masking and covering to spray primer. Spraying of primer completed 2:30am Thursday morning. I do not enjoy this time of year. Tuesday May 13, 2008 Chaos does not even start to describe all that is happening aboard the Royal Polaris. 1. Jesus, Roy, Cole, Anthony, Big D, plus 4 painters sanding marine bondo filler from hull 7:30am to 6:00pm 2. 2 men grinding on holes where engines were removed 3. last 2 mains in boat 4. 2 electricians, Billy, Aaron, Raphael, Tom Dale and another helper all working in engine room. Getting engines in the boat is only the tip of the iceberg. Now all 5 engines need to be wired and hooked to main panel, provide fuel lines, water line and exhausts 5. Coast Guard bottom inspection completed in 3 hours and American Bureau of shipping inspection completed 6. Eddie cleaning out water tank to prepare for re placement of 2'x4" piece of aluminum 7. Steve Russow our carpenter preparing and installing new dash in bridge for high tech instruments for all 5 engines 8. Rick Beck from Honor Marine installed new Furuno 1100 Fathometer. Sonar hoist dropped out of boat for service 9. Danny, a friend of Frank's is working on: a. Speakers in staterooms b. Reading lamps c. Drawer slides - installing new ones so the drawers slide properly d. Fixing all staterooms doors so they fit tighter eliminating the 'chattering' 10. Hi folks; Sunday kept 5 crew members busy the entire day continuing to clean the engine room and make it sparkle. Believe me, it was not easy and between Saturday and Sunday, it took 90 man hours to complete. Our paint crew arrived early only to find that the Strontium had not cured because of the cool weather and would have to wait until Monday morning before sanding. Monday May 12, 2008 Today was somewhat chaotic. The engine room crew got both auxiliary engines and generators into the boat. Electricians are starting to put conduit in place. Gearbox was hooked up to center main engine by 5:30 pm Monday. Painters along with crew sanded all Strontium areas and a total of 8 men applied filler to hull the entire day. Big D started masking for varnish work in the bridge. In between other jobs he will sand and varnish bridge with 3 coats. Aaron and Eddie had the nastiest job of all the day squeezing between exhausts lying on their bellies scraping and cleaning metal. I will guarantee you that by the time they got home it would take at least on hour in the shower to get clean. The best thing about these two was they could still smile and kid around after a very tough day. Today we had decent current on the backside of the island and the bass bite picked up with the improved conditions. Winds were light and the sun came in and out of the clouds. We also picked up some decent bottom fish before noon. Once again Norm moved the Shogun to the front side for an afternoon shot at the yellowtail. There were a few spots up, one looked like a school of foaming tuna as the yellows churned up the surface. A handful of fish were hooked, all on jigs. Only one made it on deck today. The fish only show for a few hours mid-afternoon, then it was back to pyramid to finish out the day.    |

Hi Folks, Saturday was a very busy day. We gave Roy and Billy the weekend off but the rest of the crew, plus 5 other guys that have worked with us in the past, were hard at work. Tom Dale (mechanic,) Greg Hibbs (electrician,) and a helper were busy hooking up two of the gear boxes to the outboard mains and will go in the boat. The center gear box and center engine is already in the boat and will be hooked up also. Gear boxes where painted white to match the new engines. Big “D” and four other men completed sanding on hull, then sandblasted where necessary, cleaned bare aluminum with Alodyne and Aluma-prep and then applied two coats of Strontium. That crew did not finish until midnight. Jesus, Anthony, Cole, Eddie and Aaron spent the entire day cleaning in the engine room. First scraping and scrubbing with solvent and then cleaning with big O. The same five guys will repeat the whole procedure on Sunday so that everything will be spotless. So far, this crew in the engine room has used: 15 gallons of solvent 140 pounds of rags Lots of gloves and stainless steel scrubbers. It is a nasty job. We are slightly ahead of schedule. Monday the auxiliary engines will go into the boat. |

We have finished up our first day of fishing San Clemente this weekend. It was an effort to scratch out a decent catch but there is plenty of potential. Once again we had a few tanks of live squid to complement our sardine and anchovy mix. We fished tight to the kelp for bass, outside in deeper water for bottom fish, and late this afternoon the Shogun was chasing those early season yellows. The weather is a bit warmer than last week, but fluctuating sea temps have kept the bass bite down. Lingcod to 12# and a few nice reds came up from the bottom, but last weeks big bonito didn't show. Chasing yellowtail on the front side of the island this afternoon gave us a little hope for a larger game fish tomorrow. The yellows were up top for a while and a school feeding high and dry produced a 28# fish on surface iron. One can only hope that tomorrow there are more spots of biting yellows.
