How to make a rod “Rail Ready” I just had a new rod made and was ready to add the cold shrink and thought I would take some pictures along the way. This is a pretty simple procedure but there are a few tips and tricks to make sure you do not waste a piece of cold shrink. There are quite a few products out there that can be used for this. I will be using a full length piece of 3m cold shrink today. This has worked well for me in the past but is by no means the only way to go. Swifty Manufacturing has a nice product in which I will be trying on my next rod. Why do we need to do this, actually we don’t however it will help prolong your fore grip when using the rail. The product: 3M 8428-18 OD Range 0.95” – 1.94” ![]() You can get it at a few places online: RS Hughes - http://rshughes.com/products/054007_34461.html Or MacMaster-Carr - http://www.mcmaster.com/ Products are supplied pre stretched on a removable core for efficiency and ease of installation. Removal of the core (unwind) after positioning allows the product to shrink into position. ![]() ![]() I like to cover the entire fore grip as I am tall and my fulcrum point changes through out the battle. ![]() Slip the tube over the butt with the tag piece towards the butt of the rod. ![]() Position the tube at the desired location to start. ![]() Pull a few coils out from the center but not to many then fine tune your starting point. BTW this is a lot easier with 2 people. If you are alone just use a drawer to hold the rod while you work. ![]() ![]() ![]() Continue to uncoil the plastic insert. TIP: unwrap the insert don’t just try to pull it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Don’t worry if it is too long just make a careful slit with a razor, you don’t have to go all the way through as it will tear along the cut line if you have a good start on it. ![]() ![]() And that’s it, ready to go!
